This site is all about sharing IT knowledge. For the technical there are articles about how to tweak your computer, how to get the best free software and how to get money off of computer hardware. For the not so technical there are articles telling you what to do when your computer goes wrong, how to protect your children on the Internet and how to save yourself money by speeding up your old computer.

Is Your Child Safe on the Internet?

Protect Children on the InternetProtecting our children when they use the Internet is an issue that grows in relevance as our children grow in years. As they get older not only does their interest in topics we’d rather keep hidden from them increase, but their proficiency with a computer also improves giving them the skills to find such taboo material. By the time they reach their teens many children will be far more proficient with a computer than their parents making our task even more difficult. This article has been written to address these dilemmas faced by all parents in this new digital world. Taking control of your home computer and the content that you allow to enter your house via the Internet, can be achieved by the use of easy to configure free software. In this article I’ll review two of these products and give you my own opinion of each to allow you to make up your own mind on which to use.

Do I Need a New Computer?

This is the question that a lot of people will be asking themselves this year: Do I need a new computer?

With Windows 7 newly released on the masses many will wonder whether their existing PC can run Windows 7 and whether Windows 7 can run all their existing software. These are questions that are best answered by your local or family tech guy (or gal). But what if you don’t have a local techie to call upon? You could go to your local computer store and ask there but I think you already know what their answer will be! You could do some research on the Internet but then there’s so much information out there a normal person could get lost in all the MHz and kbps. So what’s a normal person to do? Well, that’s where this article can help.

In this article I’ll give you all the information you need to tell whether your existing PC is:-

  • Too old without the possibility of upgrade
  • Old but upgradeable
  • Sufficient for today’s operating systems and software
  • Cutting edge technology that will make your friends jealous

If you do need a new computer I’ll also tell you where (and where not) to spend your hard earned cash. Read more.

Backing up Your Files

So few of us backup our files and we're sitting on our own self-made digital time bombs that will soon explode taking important data and precious photos with them when they go off. It's not that backing up is difficult, it's not. It's not that backing up takes a long time, it doesn't. It simply comes down to human nature and the misguided belief in the 'it will never happen to me' syndrome. But of course it will happen to you, and you and you and you because hard drives fail, they always fail. It's not a matter of if it's most definitely when!

So please take the time to read this article on how to save yourself from the heartbreak of data loss. Read more.
